When all was said and done, six men were dead and 72 others were wounded. 

William Matthews of New York was 28 years old. Matthews was incarcerated at Central Prison.

Jerry Allen Walston of North Carolina was 22 years old. Walston was incarcerated at Central Prison.

Donald Fox of North Carolina was 26 years old. Fox was incarcerated at Central Prison.

Nathaniel Latta of South Carolina was 33 years old. Latta was incarcerated at Central Prison.

John Marvin Scurlock of North Carolina was 22 years old. Scurlock was incarcerated at Central Prison.

Andrew Junior Branch of North Carolina was 40 years old. Branch was incarcerated at Central Prison.

Four men who sustained the most serious injuries were sent to Wake Memorial Hospital. The prison hospital treated twenty-nine men and returned them to their cells. Thirty-nine had emergency treatment and stayed in the prison hospital for continued care. Prison officials called in doctors from across the city to help with what one physician described as “the worst medical disaster in the history of Raleigh.” 

73 of the 78 casualties were men incarcerated at Central Prison.
